Hi Reader,
If you’re getting ready to go back to work, there’s something I want you to hear before you send out one more resume…
Because I see this all the time.
Qualified people. Moms who can absolutely do the job…getting skipped over.
Not because you’re not capable, but because your resume is working against you.
Let’s talk about what might be happening.
🚫YOUR RESUME IS TOO HARD TO READ
If everything is crammed together, long paragraphs, no spacing… a recruiter isn’t going to sit there and figure it out. They’re moving on.
✅Solution:
- Make it easy to skim.
- Use spacing. Use bullets.
- Let your experience breathe on the page.
🚫YOU'RE INCLUDING THINGS THAT DON'T ACTUALLY HELP YOU
Full address. High school details. Old jobs that don’t matter anymore. Even a photo.
None of that helps you get hired and some of it can actually hurt you.
✅Solution:
- Strip it down.
- Only include what supports the job you want now.
- If it’s not relevant, it’s taking up space.
🚫YOUR SKILLS DON'T SHINE
You might have the right experience, but if it’s buried, wordy, or not aligned with the job description, it’s getting missed.
✅Solution:
- Match your resume to the job.
- Use similar language as the job posting.
- Highlight the right skills at the top.
- Make it obvious you’re a fit.
Remember
Your resume should highlight what you can bring to the job.
It’s only purpose is to get you that first call.
And the call is where you can let your personality shine through.
Reader, if you want a real example of what recruiters actually see (and how they think when reviewing resumes), go listen to this week’s episode Why Your Resume Isn’t Getting You Interviews where I audit real resumes and walk through what works and what doesn’t.
