Where do I start? What do I even include? Do I have the right skills? Why are there 9,000 resume templates on Google?!?
Deep breath; I got you. 🧘♀️
This week on the Back to Work podcast, we talk about the do’s and don'ts of building a resume that actually works.
The good news is that your resume doesn’t need to be “Pinterest worthy”. It just needs to be a simple, clear, solid resume that gets you in the door.
I’ve been in HR for almost 20 years. I’ve seen ALOT of resumes. I know what works, and I know what gets skipped over without a second glance.
Remember, a human being is going to read your resume.
Not an algorithm. Not a robot. A person. And if your resume comes across as confusing, they’re probably moving on to the next candidate.
NOT BECAUSE YOU AREN’T QUALIFIED, but because a confused mind usually says “no”.
So let’s make sure your resume is easy to read:
- Keep only the experience that matters. If a job from 15+ years ago has nothing to do with what you’re applying for now, then let it go.
- Make your resume simple and readable. You don’t need a fancy template. You don’t need colors and boxes and sidebars. Simple is powerful.
- Remove anything that gives away too much personal info. No profile photo, no high school graduation year, no shared or cutesy email addresses.
I know that building a resume after being out of the workforce can feel like staring up at a huge blank wall.
I want you to know that you don't have to do this alone.
Sign up for a Resume Revamp and I will help you put together a resume that is, simple, powerful, and ready to send.
You got this.
In your corner, always,
Carrie
